Vegan Thanksgiving Round 2

Greetings! I hope a happy and festive Thanksgiving was had by all.

Thanksgiving 2014 was my 2nd time around as a vegan and with the best food yet.

It’s funny how things change – as you get older and wiser, especially for me over the past couple of years.

Traditions that I trusted to be sacred and right with the world I now question.

Like I’ve said in the past, I have chosen a plant-based lifestyle for my health, for ethical reasons and for the sake of this planet, so when a holiday comes around when mass genocide of a species occurs for a holiday of “thanks,” it makes you think.

Let’s take a step back from that even. What exactly are we celebrating again? The fact that the Native Americans so humbly fed the pilgrims upon their arrival to their native land for the pilgrims to soon after wipe out their entire population? It’s kind of crazy how historical facts get in the way of what American media wants you to believe.

Regardless, I do appreciate a holiday set aside each year to be thankful for all that we have – a day to be extra kind and extra conscious of those around us we appreciate so much. I know I am so very thankful for my family, my friends, my health and the planet that sustains us. So naturally, I can’t help but see it as a slap in the face when people gather around food that has caused tremendous pollution and cruelty filled with mucus, fecal matter, hormones and parasites detrimental to one’s health and well being (whether they know it or not).

I suppose from living out the vegan lifestyle for almost 1.5 years now, it all just makes so much sense. I’m happier, healthier, and more fit than ever before, all while significantly reducing my carbon footprint and living out a life of cruelty-free compassion. Why shouldn’t everyone?

300 million turkeys are slaughtered to be eaten each year, most for Thanksgiving and Christmas. If we can change this, and so easily, why shouldn’t we?

I encourage everyone to start an animal-free holiday tradition. If not for the turkeys, then for yourself and this planet.

Look at all the deliciously indulgent food you can eat instead (not to mention food that takes 1/2 the time to prepare & cook)!

Although my mom and I prepared and cooked for what felt like 2-3 days straight, it was all worth it. We were cooking for 9 people, but in any case, preparation is key.

And when you feel like you can’t take it anymore, you go exercise until you can! I know my mom and I made sure we were in the gym at 7 AM Thanksgiving morning to get an 1.5 hour workout in before the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which was essential to the day.

Some traditions stay the same, some change and some news ones are created.

Doing something because it has always been done is no reason at all. Do what you believe to be right & always make changes for the better.

Now its time for bed! A four hour drive back to Blacksburg will be my morning tomorrow. Two more weeks of way too many presentations and exams and I will be finished with my last fall semester of college!
